was in Fry’s Electronics and was looking around for a decent cordless,
optical mouse for my new Toshiba Satellite S301 laptop. Then this product
hit my eyes and it glazed over because it was something that would had
helped me out at all my previous PowerPoint presentation tremendously. It
was high on the shelf but that was no deterrent from purchasing it. What was
the main deterrent was the COST of this tremendously helpful product. It was
listed as $179.00 as of Dec. 30, 2002. The closest mouse that came close to
the cost of this is the Logitech MX700 cordless, optical mouse, but it was
on sale for $59.00…..a total of $120 difference. I shopped on-line for it
and the cost was no different. I finally caved in and purchased it and if I
didn’t like it, I could always return it and not feel bad about the
purchase. First Impressions
When I first held the Cordless Presenter, it fit like it was made for my hands. The buttons were made for presentations, but not so much for the use as a typical mouse. I LOVE the laser pointer that is built in on this mouse. The construction is of the utmost quality, with see-thru plastic on both the Presenter and the USB transmitter/receiver. The transmitter/receiver is about ½ the size of a pocket USB hard-drive that is in the market these days. I am amazed how easy it transitioned between a mouse and a pointer/presentation device. I also love the fact that it is an optical mouse, and not a ball-bearing one. The carrying case that comes with it is made out of high quality scuba diver foamed rubber that stretches to accommodate the unique shape of the Presenter. The case also comes with a little pouch tucked away for the very small transmitter/receiver.

When I started to use the mouse, it was quite awkward because it is thinner than a conventional mouse and the buttons aren’t where they are supposed to be on a mouse. But with time, I started getting used to it after a short learning curve. The Presenter have a left and right button like conventional mice, but instead of a scroll wheel in the middle, it has an up and down button that makes a clicking sound whenever you press and hold it down to scroll……that also took some getting used to, because on conventional mice, the middle scroll wheel seems so intuitive. In addition to the 4 buttons on top of the Presenter, it has a switch and a button on the bottom. The button acts as a VERY NICE trigger to effortlessly activate the laser pointer and the switch changes the Presenter from a mouse to a presenter by using the top buttons as a forward and back button on PowerPoint. The switch also turns the devices off when you don’t need to use it. The laser point can be used on both the mouse & presenter mode. This mouse is definitely a top-end device because it utilizes the Bluetooth technology which allows you to work it 30 feet away form the receiver/transmitter, while other cordless mice that I’ve looked at only has a range of about 5 to 6 feet. I have not tried to use the receiver for any other Bluetooth devices, but if I could, then it would be a definite plus.
I’m always afraid of losing the very small receiver/transmitter, which plugs directly into any USB1.1 or 2.0 port. The receiver/transmitter blinks red when the mouse is not turned on and blinks green when it establishes communication with the mouse. The mouse also has two LEDs on top. The left one will blink red when it can’t communicate with the receiver and green when it does. The right LED blinks green when the battery is good and red when the battery needs to be recharged. I didn’t even need to load the driver onto Windows XP for windows to recognize the mouse and I immediately started using the device as a mouse.

I have used this device repeatedly and I have very little complaints about it because of the functionality of it. It operates as an optical mouse, thus eliminating the need for a smooth, hard surface area, which I absolutely love, because I continually find myself using my laptop on my bed. I have given several presentations and people continuously come up to me in amazement on how fluid my presentation was and the subject of conversation continuously comes up about this device, the Cordless Presenter. Everyone absolutely loves the functionality of it and several times my friend has asked me if he could borrow the Presenter for his presentations at work because he wants to impress his supervisor. I would highly recommend this product if it weren’t for the huge price of $179 plus tax I had to pay for it. Still, if you have the money, I suggest you take it for a spin because I find it VERY useful in many ways.
